Discover 9 things you can do at Munich’s Viktualienmarkt
The Viktualienmarkt is one of Munich’s main attractions in the heart of the city. This food market, once a farmer’s market, attracts tourists and locals and it is open from Monday to Saturday.
In this unique market, you can buy food, drink a beer in its Biergarten, find souvenirs and get some fresh cut flowers. The area covers 22.000 square meters and the stands and shops are 140.
Here you can find 9 things that you can do at the Viktualienmarkt in Munich:
1. Stop for a pastry at Lea Zapf
This cute patisserie is a gem in Munich. Here you can drink a cup of coffee with one of the amazing pastries baked by Lea Zapf. In the pictures you see her stand as well as some of her pastries and a delicious vegan banana bread with a chocolate mousse and peanut cream.
2. Warm up at the Müncher Suppenküche
The Müncher Suppenküche is the perfect go to place if you are visiting Munich on a cold winter day. Here you can warm up with one of their delicious soups. They have a wide choice, from more classic soups with Maultaschen, typical German dumplings, to chili con carne.
3. Try the typical Leberkäsesemmel
The Leberkäse is a sort of sausage, typically eaten in a sandwich with sweet mustard. For an amazing Leberkäsesemmel we suggest Metzgerei Klobeck or Metzgerei Schäbitz.
4. Stop for a cold beer in the Biergarten
In the middle of the Viktualienmarkt you will find a big Biergarten. This is the perfect location to drink a beer on a summer day and enjoy typical Bavarian delicacies.
5. Try Caspar Plautz’s potatoes
Caspar Plautz is iconic at the Viktualienmarkt. In this stand you can buy potatoes or have lunch on the spot. Try one of their amazing baked potatoes topped with one of their homemade sauces.
6. Find your favorite Tea at Teaflower
This stand is one of my favorites. Here you can buy a lot of different types of tea. I especially love their Christmas teas that are available towards the end of the year.
7. A cup of coffee at Kaffeeroesterei
This stand is the perfect location to get your coffee to go while you’re strolling through the city. Here you can buy their freshly roasted beans or warm up in colder days with a cup of cappuccino.
8. Buy some flowers and decorations
Depending on the season, the Viktualienmarkt is the perfect location to buy some fresh cut flowers or Christmas decorations. Most stands selling decorations are on the south of the biergarten, you can’t miss them.
9. Drink a warm cup of Glühwein in winter
The typical German mulled wine is a must on cold winter days. Therefore, When winter arrives, you can enjoy it in several stands to warm up while visiting the city. In the picture you see the stand of Nymphenburg Sekt.
