What is the Kunstareal?
This cultural haven, situated in a 500 x 500-meter expanse, stands as one of Europe’s paramount cultural destinations, boasting a harmonious blend of museums, universities and cultural institutions. Visiting the museums
In the Kunstareal you can find 14 different museums. Tickets can be purchased online or at the location, however, here some tips
- Most museums are closed on Mondays. However, the Abgussmuseum and the Amerikahaus are open.
- Some of these museums are free, like the Abgussmuseum, the NS Documentation Centre, the Geology and the Paleontology Museum .
- Sundays are extra special because you can visit state museums for just 1€! This offer applies to all Pinakothek museums, the Egyptian Museum, Museum Brandhorst, the Glyptothek and the State Collection of Antiquities.
- Mark your calendar for the first Thursday of each month. On these day the Lenbachhaus is free to explore on that day from 18:00 to 22:00.
Kunstareal Walks
You can discover the area thanks to the Kunstareal Walks. These are free multimedia guided tours, available in English as well, that will give you more information about the architecture of the buildings. These free guides are available on the Kunstareal website and will guide you from building to building.
You can find 4 different tours:
- All-inclusive Walk: explore all significant structures on a circular route encompassing twelve stops, spanning 200 years of architectural history. The walk typically takes around 1.5 hours, with 40 minutes of actual walking time.
- All-inclusive Walk (barrier-free): explore all significant structures on a circular route encompassing twelve stops, spanning 200 years of architectural history. The walk typically takes around 2 hours and 40 minutes by wheelchair.
- Contemporary Walk: immerse yourself in the contemporary architecture of the Kunstareal. This walk introduces you to five remarkable buildings from the past 20 years.
- After-work Walk: discover the most impressive structures from two centuries on this guided tour to nine must-see buildings.
Free student concerts
If you are passionate about music, you can’t miss the free student concerts at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater. At this institution, which is part of the Kunstareal , you can enjoy an array of different concerts, from jazz to classical music, from piano performances to orchestra exhibitions. Most concerts take place in the “Große Konzertsaal” and in the “Kleine Konzertsaal”, that are to be found in Arcisstr. 12.
